The Local Government Act from 1991 gives the municipalities and county councils great freedom to decide their local structure.
Organization
In Danderyd the organizational structure has changed in recent years. A system with greater freedom of choice has been established in the educational and social sectors. Schools, day care centres and service for elderly people are organized in profit centres responsible for the activities, the employees, budget etc. The inhabitants choose among other services, which school, daycare or nursing home they want to use. The schools, both private and public, get a set amount of money from the municipality for each pupil.
Customer choice system
Danderyd's council provides a number of public services for its inhabitants. The standard is high and the services are continually evaluated to make sure that the quality remains good. Since more than 10 years Danderyd's council offers its inhabitants a choice of service providers, both public and private. The customer choice system includes childcare, education and care for the elderly.
The purpose of the customer choice systems is to offer its inhabitants freedom of choice and direct influence over these services. Decisions on how the services are designed are taken by the providers in close dialogue with the citizens who use the
services.
Political structure
The 45 representatives in Danderyd's municipal council, are elected for four-year terms at the same time as the parliamentary and county councils elections in September. The distribution between different political parties:
- Moderaterna (former Conservatives) 20
- Folkpartiet (Liberal Party) 9
- Centern (former Agrarian) 6
- Social Democrats 5

The council makes decisions on matters of principle or major importance to the local government. The council also approves the budget and tax rate. The council can delegate a great deal of decision-making power to its executive committee or other committees. The meetings are held once a month at Djursholm's castle and they are open to the public.
